  15. <p>     DIED. ELIAS CANETTI, 89, author and Nobel laureate; in Zurich.
  16. Born in Bulgaria to Jewish parents, Canetti was little known
  17. before he won the 1981 Nobel Prize for Literature. His German-language
  18. oeuvre reflects his artistic coming of age during Europe's era
  19. of dictatorship, particularly his 1960 masterwork Masse und
  20. Macht (Crowds and Power), a rich study of crowd behavior and
  21. the siren-like seductiveness of tyrants. The reclusive Canetti
  22. granted glimpses into his personal life through three volumes
  23. of memoirs. His Zurich grave site lies beside James Joyce's.
