- <p> DIED. ELIAS CANETTI, 89, author and Nobel laureate; in Zurich.
- Born in Bulgaria to Jewish parents, Canetti was little known
- before he won the 1981 Nobel Prize for Literature. His German-language
- oeuvre reflects his artistic coming of age during Europe's era
- of dictatorship, particularly his 1960 masterwork Masse und
- Macht (Crowds and Power), a rich study of crowd behavior and
- the siren-like seductiveness of tyrants. The reclusive Canetti
- granted glimpses into his personal life through three volumes
- of memoirs. His Zurich grave site lies beside James Joyce's.
